Super Bowl was a letdown

First off a congrats to the Saints on winning the Super Bowl. It was their first appearance and a good moral booster for the team, and fans. Now on to my opinion as to why it sucked for actual football fans.

Yeah so the Super Bowl was a real letdown this year. The game was uneventful, Referees blowing GLARING penalties, Half-time show was one of the worst I’ve seen in a long time, the onside kick after half-time showed no class (though it is a valid strategy; just not one I would ever endorse), The only memorable commercials were from the Budweiser brand (including Bud Light), Monster.com (the beaver on the fiddle just rocked), and Dorritos. My full opinion after the break.

To start with I hate the Saints ‘Tag Line’ – “Who Dat”. I mean really, if your going to do something like that at least try using actual words. Not to mention, I have no idea WTF it even stands for. They’re not a no-name team, they’ve been steadily getting better since Breeze took the helm at QB, I mean really why have a tag line that says ‘Who’s That’. It’s the damn New Orleans Saints, everybody knows who the hell they are. Now that that’s out of the way I can break down what I thought was wrong with the Super bowl.

Uneventful Game: For what are supposed to be the two best teams the sure sucked it up last night. While 31-17 might seem like a decent game it really shows h0w a score doesn’t tell the whole story. The Saints took a while to get going which made the first quarter pretty lame. Then the Colts Offense decided to take an extended half-time to include the second quarter. After half-time the Saints decided to do an onside-kick (more on that later). The Ref’s let the scrum get WAY out of hand (not to mention looking like they got the call wrong). Seriously, it was like the entire Saints team (coaches included) was in there and there were no flags for delay of game or anything.  The third quarter saw some awful faults for the Colts. The fourth, well lets just say it was thankfully over relatively quickly.

Officiating: First and foremost, it’s my belief that no matter what the officiating is like it’s up to the teams to overcome this and win a game. I also believe teams should be left to play the game, there’s going to be some back and forth, but that’s okay. With that said I’ll press on. Have you ever seen a game with no Pass Interference or Illegal contact down field? No, I didn’t think so. I can’t really say the Colts were interfering with the Saints as they were giving them a damn 10 yard bubble (not really but they weren’t even close). The Saints on the other hand were all over the Colts receivers, while that’s normally a good thing, they were a little too close on several key plays. On to offensive line holding. Now, I’ve seen a few games where this isn’t called all game (though very rarely). And in a game like the Super Bowl I don’t expect the little things to be called; however, there were quite a few times the defense was being blatently held (right in the whitehats face). Now this did happen for both teams; though, I thought slightly more to the Colts defense.

Onside Kick: I’m not going to make this long, but as someone who holds some of the ‘unspoken’ rules of this game in high regard I was sickened when the Saints pulled that stunt. Now, it did allow them to score to get ahead of the Colts, which is exactly what it was supposed to spur; however, I just can’t believe they did it.
